Greedy As A Bunch of Gannets

eddieholden3

On the 9th of August i paid a visit to the RSPB site at Bempton Cliffs. This is on Flamborough Head near Bridlington in North Yorkshire.

The purpose of the visit was to photograph Gannets diving for fish. There is a charter boat that works out of Bridlington and heads over to the cliffs where they chum the waters with loads of fish giving the photographers aboard plenty of opportunity to take classic shots of diving Gannets. It looks like a bit of a barrel shoot and highly unethical from a wildlife photographers point of view but i was prepared to park my ethics to satisfy my selfish ambition.

The wind was blowing 18-20 knts from the west with a .5 meter swell from the south east. As a hardened sea farer and sea safari crew myself i felt that the weather wouldn't prohibit the event. Just goes to show what i know. Event cancelled due to weather....Doh !

Having made the trip north with friends we decided to try some photography from the cliff tops at Bempton. It was my first time there and what a stunning location where thousands of Gannets roost and breed on the 300ft cliff face alongside Fulmar and Kittiwakes.

Several hundred shots later and at least one or two pics that made me smile and i headed back south.

Big thanks to Rob and Ann Brind -Surch https://naturesphotos.co.uk/ for putting me up and escorting me and a big up to my friend

and photographic inspiration Naomi Stowlow https://www.naomistolow.com/
